Aim

This exercise will help you assess how well you support your organization’s performance management procedures. It covers all key aspects of the process, including:

  • providing direction
  • setting objectives
  • identifying development needs
  • addressing poor performance
  • drafting personal development plans

Task

Download the 'Supporting Performance Management' table here and either fill it in online or print it off and fill in your answers offline.

The table lists a series of good practice statements. Work through each of them, and in the ‘Example’ column write down an occasion when you have demonstrated the competence.

If there any statements where you cannot provide an example, mark them with a cross in the ‘Gap’ column.

When you have worked through each of the statements, go back to those you have highlighted as a gap. Consider what steps you are going to take to rectify these, and make a note of them in the ‘Action’ column.

Keep this table and revisit it periodically to ensure that you have taken all the steps you have noted in the ‘Action’ column.
