Transcript. Busting the Networking Myths. Networking is a great way to meet new people, build your profile and expand horizons. But there are many common myths about it too. Myth 1. It’s a one-off activity. Keep your eyes and ears open for new opportunities to connect with like-minded people. It takes time and effort to build an effective network. Myth Two. It’s about connecting with as many people as possible. Networking is about quality of connections, not quantity. You should only have as many people as you can keep up with. Myth Three. It can all be done online. Online tools make it easier than ever to network. However, don’t neglect those face-to-face relationships too. Myth Four. Everyone else finds it easy. Truth is, networking can be daunting for lots of people. Try asking an experienced networker for tips. Or taking a friend along to events. Just don’t spend the whole time together. Myth Five. It’s about working the room. Having quality conversations might mean spending more time with some people than others. Ending your conversation needn’t be awkward if you choose your words carefully. Myth Six. It’s about attending as many events as possible. Avoid networking overload. Think about what you want from networking, do your homework, and select the events most relevant to your needs. Myth Seven. It’s about buying and selling. While networking can be a chance to promote your organisation or meet new suppliers, it’s important not to talk too much shop. Work on building rapport first, by getting to know a bit about the people you meet. Myth Eight. It’s about what others can do for you. While people in your network may well be able to help you, you should also give something back. Why not introduce your contacts to one another, share interesting industry news or info about upcoming events. Myth Nine. It’s about waiting for others to come to you. If you meet someone, you’re keen to keep in touch with, don’t just wait for the phone to ring. Be pro-active. Drop them a line and arrange a time to see or speak to them again. Myth Ten. It’s all about external contacts.
