According to U.K. national statistics, around one in four people will experience mental health problems at some point in their lives. [1] In the U.S., figures suggest one in five adults will have a diagnosable mental health condition in any given year. [2]
With figures like these, it’s important to know how to look after your mental health. And while not all issues are preventable, there are actions we can all take to improve and maintain our mental wellbeing.
1. Communicate your feelings
By talking to others, you can often get a new perspective on your worries or problems. Sharing your issues and articulating how you feel will help you think more clearly about your situation. The person you speak to may have practical suggestions about what you can do, such as breaking down issues into separate, more manageable areas, or finding places to go for further help or support.
2. Write down your worries
Simply putting your worries or concerns into words can help you think more clearly about what’s bothering you, such as feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Keeping a reflective journal or stress diary can help you track these feelings over time. If you find the thought of speaking to someone a little off-putting, many support organizations offer email or chat helplines, so that you can write about what’s troubling you instead.
