Many companies crow about their wellbeing initiatives, and offer their people things like meditation apps, mental first aid resources, and beanbags...

But what impact do these add-ons really have on happiness, satisfaction and health? And what might happen if employers started focusing on the drivers of workplace wellbeing instead?

That's what George Ward and Jan-Emmanuel De Neve set out to explore. And George is our expert guest on this episode of Pain Points.

George is the Persol Research Fellow at the Wellbeing Research Centre, and a Junior Research Fellow at Somerville College, University of Oxford. His research focuses on key markers of employee wellbeing, including happiness, satisfaction, stress, and purpose. He's studied how these things are influenced, for better or worse, by different management and organizational practices, and how they in turn affect outcomes like recruitment, productivity and turnover.

George's new book, "Why Workplace Wellbeing Matters," is a detailed account of wellbeing and its key drivers, offering a data-driven perspective on the connections between happiness, productivity, and organizational success, along with some dos and dont's for us all. You can hear George reveal some of its main findings, and discover what they mean for managers in particular, in "Workplace Wellbeing: What Works?"
