Welcome to Mind Tools' Video Learning Series from Emerald Works.
We're living in unpredictable and uncertain times. COVID-19 has affected all our lives in some way, whether socially, psychologically or economically.
At work, managers have to cope with a difficult present and an uncertain future, as organizations struggle to come to terms with the human and business costs of the pandemic.
So how should you manage your team during a downturn like this one? Here are three key areas to focus on:
1. Communicate Clearly
First, good communication is vital.

Speak honestly with your team, and tell them as much as you can, when you can. Be clear and concise to avoid false information and rumors from spreading.
If you do have bad news to share, try to give it all at once. Letting information trickle out can make it look as though you've got something to hide. Withholding information like this can cause people to become angry and frustrated.
And handle the situation particularly sensitively if you do have some difficult news for an individual. For example, if you're making them redundant or cutting their hours. Be honest and treat them with dignity and respect.
2. Boost Morale
In tough times, morale can take a hit. Your team members will likely see their friends or co-workers lose their jobs and worry about their own.
Look for signs of stress in your team. These may include lower productivity, more health complaints, or even emotional distress. If you notice any of these symptoms, take action!
Motivate people by regularly telling them how much you value and appreciate the work that they do. And remind them that their ideas and suggestions have more impact now than ever before.

When someone on your team does a good job, sincerely thank them for their efforts, and praise them openly.
3. Provide Focus
It can be challenging to keep your team focused during a downturn, especially if your company is laying people off.
So, lead by example. Staying focused and in control yourself will show people what you expect of them.
And keep setting goals, too. Providing your team with a strong sense of purpose will help people to stay focused and productive.
Finally, remind everyone that this, too, shall pass. Whether it's COVID-19 or the economic fallout, things can and will get better.
