There are a number of things that can unintentionally hinder effective problem-solving. Remaining vigilant to the potential pitfalls outlined below can improve your chances of reaching a successful resolution.
Habit
Sometimes a new approach is all that is needed to resolve a problem. It is important not to become trapped in the ‘but we’ve always done things this way’ cycle, and to try looking at the issue from a fresh perspective. Imagining a new member of the team coming fresh to the problem can help the mist to clear.
Perception
Perceptions can color how problems and potential solutions are seen. People are often unaware that their perception is influencing the way a problem is viewed. Trying to see the same situation from another person’s viewpoint can help to shed light on the matter.
Fear
Everyone experiences fear. Fear of failure, fear of the unknown and fear of being laughed at or rejected are all common. This fear can prevent the selection of what may be the most effective solution, with a more familiar or tried and tested solution being preferred. Working through all the potential outcomes to a solution and envisaging the worst case scenario can help ease the apprehension.
Assumptions
All too often assumptions are accepted as fact. A little like perception, assumptions are often not consciously made. When tackling the problem-solving process, it is important to stop at each stage and consciously think about what it is that backs up each fact.
