Rachel Salaman: Welcome to this edition of Expert Interview from Mind Tools with me, Rachel Salaman.

You don't need me to tell you that the world of work is changing. The combination of social and economic shifts and rapid advances in technology means that none of us can be 100 percent sure that our job will still be there in five, 10 or 20 years' time. Is there anything we can do about this other than keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best?

My guest today believes that the key to future career success lies in our own hands. Yes, the world is changing but, in her view, there's plenty we can do to avoid being a casualty. She is Barbara Mistick, president of Wilson College and the co-author, with Karie Willyerd, of a new book called, "Stretch: How to Future-Proof Yourself for Tomorrow's Workplace."

Barbara joins me on the line from Pittsburgh. Hello, Barbara.

Barbara Mistick: Hello, Rachel. How are you today?

Rachel Salaman: Very well, thank you. Now, as I mentioned, your book is called, "Stretch." What exactly do you mean by that?

Barbara Mistick: Well, we really wanted to answer the question of how to stay relevant in your work life and our answer to that was to stretch. Stretch how you learn, stretch how you stay open in your thinking, stretch to build a diverse network and experiences, and to stretch your motivation.
