Narrator: Take a moment to look at your team. What do you see? Chickens or geese? Sure, chickens can be productive. But geese can fly. And here's the thing. Whether they fly or not, is up to you. As a leader, you can clip their wings or encourage the them to leave the nest.

Succession planning means looking at your team, and asking what happens when you're gone. Will they scatter or continue their journey?

Set them up for success by identifying skill gaps. What do you bring that no one else can do? Then make sure to build those skills and abilities in others.

Offer stretch assignments, job shadowing, and coaching to give them a chance to spread their wings. So that when the day comes that you leave the organization, get promoted, or take on new responsibilities, your team won't get stressed about pecking order, but focus instead on flying in the right formation. You might even find the goose that lays the golden egg.

What's one thing you can do today to make sure your team will be able to soar without you?
