Build the Learning Culture You Want

Andrew Heather

September 9, 2016

Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.

– John Dewey, philosopher and educator

More and more companies are beginning to see the value of creating a learning culture, rather than relying on the old model of prescribed training. Advances in learning technology are making self-directed learning easier than ever. The quick-hit, mobile nature of modern solutions means that education can be more easily balanced with a busy working life.

All of us in L&D want to keep on top of the rapid technological changes in our field. This means becoming actively involved with our community. A great way to do this is to sign up for a webinar such as the one that Mind Tools held recently, in association with education tech company Degreed, on the topic of building a learning culture. Events like these are valuable opportunities to hear about the latest thinking in L&D – in this case, courtesy of our very own Senior Vice President of Commercial Development, Ollie Craddock.

Ollie gave some interesting quotes from leading organizations about what it means to nurture a learning culture as a mindset, as well as a process. He also spoke about the importance of balancing the needs of the organization with the ongoing process of allowing staff to learn and grow. For example, insight and technology company CEB found that nurturing a productive learning culture means better business results. This includes a 12 percent improvement in employee performance, an average increase in revenue of 1.4 percent and a profit increase of 3.2 percent.

Ollie also reveals that four times as many people are self-studying as are undergoing prescribed training, according to a Mind Tools survey carried out this year. Even more significantly, 97 percent of those surveyed said that self-directed study improves their business performance.

If you didn’t catch the webinar, you needn’t miss out on the learning! You can get a virtual version of Ollie’s presentation, in slideshow format, below. Simply click the Next Slide button to learn more about the importance of fostering a learning culture, and how it can affect your business.

Of course, you get the best experience of an event like this when you attend it live. Look out in our blogs and social media for news of more webinars from Mind Tools. Also, be sure to put these dates into your calendar now:
