Topic: 2017 – Making Your Goals Work for You
About This Week’s Chat
“Ask yourself if what you’re doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow.” – Unknown
In my young adult years, I was very overweight. Everybody in the family was very “concerned” about me and tried to get me to lose weight. Someone offered to pay for a slimming club membership. Another person was forever going on about what I should and shouldn’t eat. My mother was constantly on my case. At the time, all the well-intentioned advice that I didn’t ask for fell on deaf ears. It wasn’t in my heart yet to take care of my health in a way that was good for me.
Some years later, I felt that I wanted to improve my health and my appearance. There were a number of months between taking the decision to being ready to make the actual changes. Only then was I ready to set real goals and to work to achieve them.
When it’s time to set goals for the New Year, we sometimes shy away from doing it. It’s not because there aren’t things that we’d like to accomplish. On the contrary, there are so many things we’d like to achieve that we don’t know how to focus our goal-setting vision on the things we want most.
We live in a time where knowledge is easy to come by, and we learn and learn for the sake of knowing. We read self-help books, attend seminars, watch dozens of TED talks, and listen to podcasts, but often things stay pretty much the same.
Although you may have lots of knowledge and know-how to set goals theoretically, do you have the courage to translate your knowledge into action? Are you brave enough to make the changes that you should?
In our last Twitter poll, we asked why people didn’t reach their goals and 31 percent of people said they lacked self-discipline. In our #MTtalk Twitter chat this week, we’re talking about making your goals work for you in 2017. We’ll discuss habits, attitudes, skills, and approaches that will help you to make 2017 a productive year.
The following questions may spark some thoughts in preparation for the chat:
- What works better for you: a few goals or many goals?
- Is there a new habit you’d like to adopt?
- How will you go about adopting a new habit?
- What skills do you need to learn to help you achieve your goals?
- What attitude will help you to achieve your goals?
To help you to prepare for the chat, we’ve compiled a list of Mind Tools resources for you to browse:
- How Good Is Your Goal Setting?
- Eight Goal-Setting Mistakes
- SMART Goals
- Golden Rules of Goal Setting
- Locke’s Goal-Setting Theory
At Mind Tools, we enjoy hearing from people all over the world who share their thoughts and experiences with us. So we’d like you to participate in the #MTtalk chat, too, this Friday at 1pm EST (6pm GMT). Remember, we feature great participant responses right here on our blog every week!
